Medtronic has initiated a voluntary recall of its MiniMed 600 and 700 series insulin pumps due to potential issues with shortened battery life. Customers are urged to monitor their devices closely, as the pumps may stop insulin delivery unexpectedly, increasing the risk of serious health complications like hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

The recall follows reports that physical impacts to the pump can damage internal components, leading to premature battery depletion. Since January 2023, Medtronic has received 170 reports of hyperglycemia and 11 cases of DKA potentially linked to this issue.

The FDA has classified this recall as a class I, the most serious category, indicating a significant risk of injury or death. Users are advised to replace the battery as soon as they hear the “Low Battery Pump” alarm and should carry spare batteries and have a backup treatment plan in place.

For those experiencing a noticeable decline in battery life, Medtronic recommends contacting the company for potential pump replacement
